A Description of the Cockpit Motion Facility and the Research Flight Deck Simulator
نویسنده
چکیده
The NASA Langley Research Center’s (LaRC) Visual Motion Simulator (VMS) has provided six degree-offreedom motion cues for research programs since 1974. During that period the VMS has provided a generic cockpit with motion performance for a large number of critical research programs. The cockpit has been continually upgraded, however the age of the simulator, coupled with future requirements that the VMS cannot meet, has necessitated the development of the Cockpit Motion Facility (CMF). Some of these requirements include greatly improved motion characteristics (acceleration, maximum excursion, bandwidth), full-mission capable simulators operating in either fixed-base or motion-base modes, simulators with large cross-cockpit display systems, improved data and video networks, and easily reconfigurable cockpits. This paper describes the design concepts and the simulator architecture associated with the CMF and the simulators located in the facility. The Research Flight Deck, the first operational simulator in the CMF is discussed in detail. Cockpit Motion Facility

Integration of Cockpit Displays for Surface Operations: The Final Stage of a Human-Centered Design Approach
A suite of cockpit navigation displays for low-visibility airport surface operations has been designed by researchers at NASA Ames Research Center following a human-centered process. This paper reports on the final research effort in this process that examined the procedural integration of these technologies into the flight deck. Using NASA Ames’ high-fidelity Advanced Concepts Flight Simulator...
متن کاملDesdemona: Advanced Disorientation Trainer and (sustained-G) Flight Simulator
Desdemona is a sophisticated demonstration, simulation, training and research facility specified by TNO Human Factors and developed by AMST Systemtechnik. The Desdemona concept adds a sustainable G-load to the conventional Stewart platform motion, without the angular accelerations encountered in centrifuges during the G-onset. This is accomplished by having the aviator sitting in a fully gimbal...

Within the context of a European research project FANSTIC, NLR defined and implemented an example of a modified glass cockpit which allows aircraft operations within future 4D Air Traffic Management environments, using digital datalink as the primary means of communication. The FANSTIC project is a collaborative research project, partially funded by the European Commission. The investigation pr...
متن کاملPaired Approach: a Closely Spaced Parallel Runway Approach Concept
The paired approach procedure is intended to facilitate IFR approaches to closely spaced parallel runways (closer than 2500 feet) and increase runway throughput where parallel ILS approaches cannot be conducted under instrument meteorological conditions. The paired approach procedure requires that air traffic control pair compatible and eligible aircraft and place them on the final approach cou...
متن کاملThe Assessment of Situation Awareness and Workload
This paper presents a concept which warrants a highest possible degree of situation awareness and efficient man−machine interaction on the flight deck, not being confined to the cockpit domain, though. This concept offers the solution to counteract the possible negative consequences of certain flight situations, which are, usually not known in advance, susceptible to pilot errors. It is founded...
